Why I Combine Touch and Acupressure with Breathwork
If you’ve ever felt a wave of emotion while stretching, or noticed that your shoulders stay hitched up to your ears when you're stressed, you already know a fundamental truth: your body holds onto your life story.
In my breathwork practice, I use a specific style called Conscious Connected Breathwork. While the breath itself is a powerful healing tool, adding gentle touch and targeted acupressure acts like a key—unlocking places where tension and old emotions have been trapped for years.
Here is why this combination works so deeply, how it helps your body let go, and how we always keep you safe during a session.
The Breath as a Diagnostic Map
When we start an open-mouthed breath pattern in a session, your breath acts like a map. It immediately shows us where energy and air move freely—and where things feel stuck or blocked.
For a long time in my own life, I had deep belly breathing, but my upper chest was completely still. Why? Grief and sadness had formed a kind of "invisible armour" around my heart. My body was staying in an old survival state, physically blocking my breath from reaching that space.
To understand how to release that armour, we have to look at a special tissue in the body called fascia.
What Is Fascia? (Your Body's Connected Web)
Imagine a fine, flexible web that wraps around every single muscle, organ, and nerve in your entire body. That web is your fascia.
Fascia isn't just structural; it records our life experiences, stress, and unresolved emotions. When we hold onto unexpressed feelings like grief, fear, or anger, our body stays in "fight or flight" mode. Over time, this causes the fascia to harden, tighten, and lose its flexibility.
This hardening can show up as:
Chronic physical tightness (like tight shoulders or a restricted chest)
Unexplained aches and pain
A feeling that you can't take a full, deep breath
How Touch and Breathwork Melt the "Armour"
When we bring gentle acupressure and breathwork together, we work with three distinct layers of your body:
1. The Outer Layer (Creating Safety)
Just under your skin sits a layer of fascia packed with sensitive nerves. Before your body will ever let you access deep-seated emotions, it needs to know it is completely safe. Gentle rocking or light pressure here speaks directly to your nervous system, reassuring you: "You are safe to open up now."
2. The Muscle Layer (Melting the Tension)
This deeper layer wraps around your muscles and bones—where "emotional armour" builds up. When I apply continuous pressure to these spots while you keep your breath flowing, two things happen: oxygen floods the tissue, and gentle heat builds up.
This triggers a natural process in which hardened, stiff fascia warms up and softens back into a fluid, flexible state.
3. The Organ Layer (Releasing Stored Grief)
This innermost layer wraps around your vital organs, including your heart and lungs. When deep grief hits, this tissue contracts to protect your heart, which is why your chest can feel so tight. Holding gentle pressure over areas like your breastbone or ribs gives your heart physical room to expand, giving old emotions the space they need to finally move out of your body.
Safety and Boundaries Always Come First
Somatic touch and acupressure are incredible tools, but they must always be used with care. Touch is always optional and client-led.
Touch is always paused or completely avoided if:
You haven't given clear, explicit consent (or if you simply prefer self-touch).
You feel overwhelmed or emotionally flooded.
You have a recent physical injury, surgery, or specific medical condition.
You are navigating deep trauma without feeling grounded first.
Ready to Un-Armor Your Body?
Your body remembers everything your mind has tried to step past. By pairing conscious breath with grounding touch, we aren't just working with your lungs—we are helping your whole nervous system let go of what it no longer needs to carry.
